grow lamps
A friend told me he uses a 315CMH and it works better than a 1000w LED any ideas? I am thinking about growing indoors now that the prices have come down.

I think you'll find a true 1000w Led would leave any CMH away.
Don't confuse what cheap light manufacturers claim. What matters is what it draws from the wall.
What space are you going to grow in?

Who males a true 1000w LED? Do they sell Unicorns by chance?

That depends on the LED, honestly.
Is the LED 1000 ACTUAL watts, or is that just the "description"??
If it's actual watts, then simple math tells you it is not comparable. But you'll find most LEDs are 1000 watts in name only. So depending on the true wattage, it's possible.
And... I say this as a die hard HPS grower.

A Mars Hydro TS1000 is about 150 actual watts give or take a few watts.
Most brands go by the brightness of a light not the actual watts.

HID customers can go by true Watts, its simple, 1w =1w and I want 40W+ per sq ft. Done deal.
The LED manufacturers make it more complex with a whole new set of acronyms, and 95% of them flat out lie about the coverage. They will claim to cover a 4 x 4 area for flower but if the PPFD map goes below 600 in the corners, they are lying and what's worse is they know they are lying. Buds need 600 PPFD min in flower. Those buds in the middle that are getting 1100+ PPFD are doing great but they dont share the PPFD with the buds in the outer corners so the average means nothing.
i run 2 or 3 1000 watt HIDS and I would love to replace them with LED's because of the electrical costs of powering them, and the added costs of the AC to cool the grow room.
All that said, pick a light and grow something, what ever you pick will be out dated and on sale someplace by the time time is arrives so just take the plunge.

I'm hoping just to grow 2 or 3 plants for personal use and trying to decide if it's feasible my other problem would be how do I deal with the smell

I have read about HPS in the paast but isn't that mostly for the budding stage or does it work for veg also? I appreciate everyone's responses. I am new to indoor growing but am thinking about it because I just cannot get enough daylight time to grow well outdoors

If you plan on growing indoors your going to need to invest a bit of money if you want to grow anything worth smoking
light LED cheaper to run also runs cooler biggest investment your going to make you want a full spectrum that you can control the different spectrum Red & Blue next an exhaust fan and carbon filter an oscillating fan and a grow tent 3x3 or 4x4 so it’s easier to control plants environment temperature and smell also invest in a ph meter get some good seeds and nutrients should be able to get everything for under $1200. That’s the price of 1/2 pound of weed wholesale that’s one way to look at it
I use a solar storm that I have for years and I got a new solar system this year by California lights the controller on the new light is bad ass go on YouTube check them out see all the things you can do with it and I have 2 39x39 tents
happy growing

Usually, 6 to 700 watts in an led will get you close to 1000w hid. Fluence grow lights are used by the pros to produce some of the best bud available. The bar lights run cooler and you can bring them in close for dense bud.

I agree its kind of comparing apples to oranges or maybe in this case Sativa to Indica's

It's not easy with LEDs that's for sure. The angle of the lens can make a difference. HID definitely works but heat and electric bills are the issues.

You do want to calculate your true watts at the wall and in your case divide it by 50 I think the sweet spot personally is between 50 -60 true watts per sq ft.
