Hello is it okay and possible to top a young plant that I started indoors under a grow light and by seed I just heard it can speed up growth and help the plant is that true? I plan on the moving the plant outdoors in the ground once it weather gets warmer in April I'm in Washington state.

Thanks

    • Topping a plant can increase yield. If that's helping the plant, then yes. Otherwise, probably not much.

Are you sure the ground will be warm enough, in April, in Wash. state?

      • Yes the ground should be 50+ degrees by the time they are pretty much raised bed in natural organic mixed fertilizer soil.. our temperatures should be able to handle the weather and the plant will slowly get used to it.. they are tough plants.

      • Moving indoor plants to outside sun right away will shock the plants, if you decide to I would put them in the shade for a few days before direct sunlight. To me its a lot of risk for the reward. If your growing outside the season is long enough to grow some monsters.

        • Yes I said that I'm growing outside I just started a few seeds indoors and they are on 18+hrs light a day... I just put one outside to see a few hours during the day it's sunny enough they should get used to sun and not be shocked I'm not leaving them overnight if anything it well slowly help it get exposed to the sun and eventually be planted in the ground.. I don't know how much you know about growing and starting plants but you didn't really answer my question So thanks anyway.

          • Got to be in the air. You can't fix it.

              • (PDF) Early topping: an alternative to standard topping increases yield in cannabis production (researchgate.net)

this is true when growing with clones you top the cutting on the mother plant and it will speed up growth afterward:

In commercial settings, cannabis is generally propagated through cuttings, a process referred in the industry as cloning. Some producers perform either topping or fimming to trigger the production of axillary shoots, which will enhance the number of flowers per plants and thus increase the yield of the cannabis plants. Topping or fimming is generally performed after the cuttings have been transferred to rooting media for two weeks. We have tested a new method to increase the shoot number per plant. The modification of the standard topping method consist of performing the topping on mother plants, prior to taking the cuttings for cloning, and the cuttings are taken one week after the topping is performed. The resulting plantlets develop axillary shoots much faster and the time of production from cuttings to harvesting is decreased by 7-10 days. The method proposed herein requires minimal adjustment to the existing workflow and the plants produce as much as when standard topping is performed. Moreover, this method cuts backs on the production time and nearly two weeks are saved compared to the standard topping procedure since the plantlets do not need to recover after topping. Application of this new procedure results in faster production time and ultimately enhanced productivity.

                • What you want to do is FIM the plant as opposed to topping just as long as you avoid cutting the little growth tips on either side you are good.

that way it wont slow the growth of the developing plant.

                  quicker recovery time
