First time grower, how am I doing

Hi, this is my first time growing. I’m using a spiderfarmer sf4000 led inside of a grow tent. I planted two blue dream seeds about a month ago and they both look very different from each other.

Do these look healthy, and are there any obvious signs of something I’m doing wrong or could improve on? I topped the one plant and haven’t touched the other. Any constructive criticism or feedback would be much appreciated.

    • Here’s the second plant. I couldn’t figure out how to add both to the initial post. :/

          • I’m using fox farms happy frog soil, and fox farms trio, and also cal mag. I’ve been using it sparingly because I don’t want to overdo it and get nutrient burn on the plants.

My light schedule is 18 on, 6 off but some days I’ll add an extra 4 hours onto it for 20/4. Is this detrimental?

Thanks guys, I’m excited to have a new hobby!

            • yeah new hobbies are great! Im starting to get into exotic tomatoes and hydroponic strawberries. I think youre off to a great start! excellent nutrients and soil. just take it all in as a learning lesson. I wouldnt change a thing!  ive heard foxfarms is very concentrated so dont go overboard

              • Using Fox Farms Happy Frog you shouldn't have to feed them anything the 1st month.

              • Thanks, I’ve been using about a quarter of the recommended dose just to be safe. I learned my lesson a few months ago with nutrient burn. It was my first year growing anything, planted a bunch of veggie seeds for my outdoor garden in jiffy pots. Drowned them in the blue miraclegro powder thinking I was going to end up with monster plants. I watched every single one of them wilt and die. Lesson learned, lol.

Any idea why these two plants look drastically different even though they’re supposed to be the same strain and I got them out of the same seed pack?

                • no two seeds are the same. just like people, unless you have an identical twin/clone

                  • And thats why cloning rules

                  • The only suggestion I have is to make sure your ppfd from that light isn't over 500 in veg. I have that light as well. If the pdf get over 300 to 500 in veg it will show slow growth. I say this from my own experience! Once it starts flowering you can go as high as 800 ppfd but not much more than that. and not @ light flip but when the plant is actually flowering. Hope things go well for you!

                    • That might explain why it seems like they’re growing pretty slow. I don’t have a way of measuring ppfd right now, but it’s in a 4x4 tent and I have the dimmer switch set to about 40%. I may lower it a little and see if it helps.

I’m growing in a cold basement so I’ve been trying to keep the dimmer switch set as high as I can without bleaching the leaves to generate extra heat because I don’t like leaving the space heater on if I’m away from home.

                      • I have heard you can go as high as a 1100 ppdf in flower, I will find out this grow.

                      • I would do a little foliar feeding and add some cal/mag or Epsom salt to green the up a bit.  I agree you shouldnt need to feed them in Happy Frog but you could add some root supplements, recharge is a good one but there are others. I think not adding that has probably slowed your growth a bit, you sure have enough lite for it.

Photone is an app I use to check PPFD, I think it only works on Iphones but there are a few others out there that work. I have a lux meter and the Photone app matches it exactly for lux and I have heard it does the same for par meters.

To be honest compared to my first grows you kind of piss me off doing so well, lol.

                        • Thanks for the advice, I have an iPhone and downloaded photone and will try it next time I’m at the tent.

I think another factor for slow growth is that I turn my spaceheater off when I’m not home because I’m paranoid of burning the place down, and the tent will drop to 60 degrees at times. It seems like when I get to consistently keep the tent at 70+ it has growth spurts, but maybe that’s just my imagination.

                          • Thats probably true but I have never been disappointed because of slow growth or long flower times. I think you got this from the sounds of things.

                          • Your plants look great and is seems like you did your homework before you started growing so great job! This is an addictive hobby! I actually think I enjoy growing more than smoking! Lol . Welcome!

                            • A plant can only absorb so much light over that it is detrimental. Unless you are using c02. Being newer grower I didn't think you were using c02. There are ppfd phone apps for Iphone or an android phone. I use the 1 for android. My wife has an iphone both phones read damn near the same so I don't think it matters if it's an iphone or and android. It needs different ppfd during different life cycles. Dr. Bruce Bugbee explains ppfd in detail on youtube. And lots of other ppfd explainers on youtube. Just sift through the goofballs on there, as with any social media. Hope that helps. Just wanted to pass on things I have learned about the sf400 since I had the same light. Your seedlings look just fine to me as well.

                              • No argument here, less is usually more with weed and its almost always enough.

                                • Make sure you calibrate which ever app you might get!

                                • Very good!

if you are growing organic I would suggest some of the following to be added:

Bacteria from rice water and milk (see my recipe)

                                  Aloe vera

                                  Water from soaking beans

The above should stimulate root production

                                  • Looks good so far. Be careful you don't get too much advice. Just saying, keep it fairly simple and learn as much as you can from each grow. These guys are great about helping and sharing tips.
