Hello, I was wondering what would be a good soil and fertilizer to start off with as this will be my first grow of many to come.

    • Hello Donna and welcome to weedportal! i dont grow in soil but many people here do. I did used to work at a local hydroponic store and the gold standard is FoxFarm soils. specifically Fox Farms Ocean Forest or Fox Farms Happy Frog. They have enough nutrients in the soil that you can start a plant and only need to water for the first few weeks. Depending on your location you can get those soils locally or thru mail order from Walmart.com or Amazon

Fox Farm also makes a full line of fertilizers

I will leave the rest to the soil growers to help you further

A good online reference for new growers is https://www.growweedeasy.com/

Here we consider growweedeasy as our bible

      • so, i am assuming you are wanting to grow indoors because the outdoor season is basically over unless you are in Australia

          • yes so if youre planning to grow indoors you would need a decent grow light. most of the members that grow indoors prefer LEDs but you can also get the jb done using a T-5 or a CFL fluorescent set up. Youve got alot of homework to do as far as soils, fertilizers and grow lights..

some people grow in a closet but most prefer a tent. here is a good tutorial you can refer to using an HLG V2 Led grow lamp. we are all routing for ya!

          • also when ur starting new baby plant(seedlings) dont over water em...and when ya do water em try to keep a lil distance away from the lil stems..it makes the roots spread out more lookin for moisture and dont feed them anything for 3 weeks er more...Fox Farm soil has nuff nutes in it for a few weeks...and try to get a small fan to gently make a breeze on the lil seedlings..helps make them get stronger stems sooner...lot of times some seedlings will look like they reach a point and stop doin anything...when this happens dont kill em with love..like dont try diff nutes ect to make em start grown..lotta times the roots are growing and at a point the lil baby will take off like a rocket...and also all strains grown differently ...you will see that as you grow more strains..GL

                • Welcome to the Portal!

Whatever you start your seed in, Rapid Rooter, Rockwool, soil, sprinkle the top with cinnamon.

Damping off is a PITA, especially for beginners. Cinnamon prevents it.

                  • Soil. Roots Organic Original (has about 4 weeks of organic nutes so I donot add anything except for cal/mag and root enhancers and sometimes Silica. I use TPS Nutrient Component series. I use their feed charts. If you can find soil make sure you get it from a reliable source( like kept indoors) . I have bought some off Amazon and it had Fungus Gnats uggggh..So I buy locally and have had no problems since. I have ordered off line too and everything was  fine so you kinda roll the dice.

                    • I am going to buy from a grow store in VT, i was going to order from amazon but someone else told me the same thing and that it can be really old and the nutrients can be very little to none left.... why do you add Silica?

                      • I have ordered my coco loco from Amazon several times and not had an issue. I have always used fox farm soils and nutrients but I can't find them locally.
