Trimming

I’m going out of town soon leaving on Wednesday night and returning Sunday evening I was going to lollipop and trim off some fan leaves but since I won’t be able to water them for 3-4 days should I hold off on the trim so the plant has more leaves to draw moisture from or does it not matter? I have been needing to water every 2-3 days so I’m hoping no issues. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks grow fam

    • Leaves are more for releasing water, not drawing it in. The stomata opening and closing regulates how much moisture the plant releases, depending on the climate.

      Shwazz away!

      • I learned something new I knew the leaves transpire but I also thought the plant would and could draw moisture from growth because fan leaves are always looking wilted when pot was light which obviously means there thirsty. Thank you

        • Don't get me wrong...a wilted (dry) leaf will absorb moisture (foliar spray) through osmosis through the cell walls. But only to satisfy its own cells.

        • Interesting question, will they need less water with less leaves or do they need the extra leaves to draw water from?  As soon as you trim they generally start making new growth so will they need more water for the new growth then would to just keep the old growth going. Hmmm. I dont think it will matter much and either way they will be fine but I would consider doing 50/50 just to see what happens.

          • Hearing responses you might be right as far as 50/50 I definitely did not consider the fact that once trimmed they will look to draw moisture from somewhere to support new growth. Thanks CPW

            • Yes fewer leafs means less water is needed, I’ve learned this first hand from growing in small pots.

A leafy girl will dry the cup up fast, compared to a strain with a high bud to leaf ratio.

              • Thanks Joshua. Might do a light trim nothing too crazy.

              • "Draw water from" ... leaves don't store water. Each leaf has enough water to maintain that leaf's cells. Any extra is transpired out.

Water intake is through the roots.

Fewer leaves should mean less of a water need for the plant as a whole.

                • So they pull dry nutrients from the leaves with no chaser, yuck

                  • I was thinking leaves are  what pulled water up through the roots as they develop new growth, then they after they mature they are storage for Mobile nutrients, I didn't know the roots push the water up.

Looking back when I Shwazz I do it at the flip and again after 22 days, my records show the water I needed to replace in the RDWC goes up daily through the grow until the last 2 weeks when it slows down. Records from before I started Shwazzing have too many gaps to say either way.

                  •    Leaves absorb light to photosynthesize. i would think you would be alright to trim it. most it will do is slow down growth for a couple days imo. gl

                    • Thanks big dog luckily it’s 4 days at the most and if I had to I could really take some jugs and suspend them over the soil and put a small hole in container and let it slow drip for a day or 2 but I will make the room a little cooler before I leave.

                    • I am having a similar conversation with my sister in Texas about her tomato's. The heat is killing them even though she is watering them every day so she is going to cut them back and hope for a later harvest. Her garden is a could of acres and its been over 100 for a while this summer.

                      • Hulkster you know you can't go "out of town" when you grow...he,he,he Without getting too technical, water is taken up thru the xylem from the roots, to the leaves, in a process called osmosis. This keeps the plants leaves happy and healthy. More leaves, more water is transported. Along with water, dissolved salts are moved up into the plant too. So I wouldn't worry to much either way, but I would skip a feed, and water to runoff before you leave.

                        • I know it Chubby it’s not a vacation by any means but you guys are definitely easing my anxiety over leaving my babies and my dog I hate doing both but a Godfather has to do what he has to do haha looking forward to seeing my baby niece plus the laws on smoking are way more lax in Michigan than Florida so there is an upside. Brother in law plans on taking me around to some dispensaries while there hopefully I can score some good seeds. Thanks for the help brotha

                        • @ CPW. The heat here has been ridiculous too ! Tell your sister that she can cool the tomatoes down by syringing them with cold/cool water once a day. More often if possible . Pruning the interior of the plant will help too . Peace

                          • I think she has a couple hundred feet of tomato's in garden, the tomato's may like that but she would probably have heat stroke before she made it to the end of the first row. lol
