autoflower can I make them shorter than feminized???

I use White Rhino Feminized, I go from seedling to 12-12 right from the start, light is MH 3 weeks, then HPS. Usually done in 10 weeks maybe less. (1) If I start using some autoflower seeds will they end up shorter? Even going 12-12 from the start sometimes I get plants too tall for my short indoor grow area? I like one big cola up the middle and not much else. (2) If I do auto flower would I still do 12-12 from the start? (3) Same nutes? and is the product as strong for THC? (4) Is the yield down a lot, I'd rather have less yield and better nuggs. Getting tired of tall plants. wasted time and extra trimming. I have about 3 to 4 ft between the light and top of reservoirs. (5) approx time per grow, in weeks? Thank You, I will be ordering for next grow but want to change up a few things here, make less work. TJB

    • 1.  Generally, all of my autos have stayed shorter than the photos I've grown. I don't think autos stretch as much as photos. But if you're searching for that single cola plant, I don't think you're gonna find that in autos.

      2. If you grow autos, your light schedule can be anywhere from 12/12, to 24/7, all up to you.

      3. Same nutes, just a little less of them, in general. I have had heavy feeding autos, but most like it lighter. No, the product will not be as strong as it's photo counterpart. That 5% Ruderalis does have an effect, and a lot of times it's slightly lower THC.

      4. If you prefer less yield, that's good. But only if you don't add the "better nuggs" part. And, instead of tall plants, you may end up with short VERY bushy ones. So, if you don't like trimming, maybe autos aren't for you.

      5. Whatever the breeder says, you can usually add at least 2 weeks, if not a month to that. Not necessarily a bad thing, because the plants are bulking up in that extra time.

      • If your plant height is the problem, incorporate some low stress training and maybe even a SCROG or even a couple layers of netting to keep your canopy in check. And always remember the stretch and if you have to keep training during the stretching period.

        • i have a 2x2x 4 it's short. i took clones rooted and gave them a few days and then went to 12hr days. mom was short so I knew it wasn't going to be that bad. still crazy full tent

you can do the same with an auto let it get a few leaves give it 12 but that won't matter to the auto look at my photo of the auto shooting past my light! 😀

          • All great answers! Bluemms answer about a Scrog I completely agree with. When I first started growing I had very limited height so I learned to Scrog. I can veg a plant for 6 weeks and get a really respectable harvest in under 40", and that includes the height of a 5 gallon pot and the distance I need from my light. Scrog is definitely something that might help you because you could go with a smaller pot and a less intense light that I have and get a pretty short setup. I posted a picture of a Scrog I did so you can get an idea of what we are talking about.

            • You can keep either at what ever height you want with a little training. I wouldnt mainline an auto but I have SCROGed them as in kept them short with a net. I agree with most of what RbtAsq has to say except they will continue to stretch after start flowering. If you keep feeding them N they will get out of control in hydro.

              • How is the White Rhino strain? That is one I have wondered about for a long time but I think your the first to mention growing it. If what you describe is working for you the only thing I would change is doing a SCROG to keep the height to the minimum.

From my limited experience with Autos, flowering time is the same for them and their Photoperiod counter parts and I dont think Autos will be finished any sooner

                • White Rhino, great strain, usually short and fat and strong. Rock hard nuggs.

                  • Cool, I think the bonus of growing Autos is that you dont have to worry about them hermi-ing because of a light leak. Other that I don't see the point, but rumor has it I am biased

                  • I think I stick to the Feminized, no autoflower, I knew it was a bad idea. Otherwize I would have known by now but I know no body who does autoflower except up in Washington state and I've never seen what they get. They don't do hydro very well, they do in the dirt.
