Conflicting information about Clones.

I am having trouble with cloning. To wet, to dry, this cloning agent or that, how long to keep dome on or off, venting, humidity levels, mothers, where to take clones from, when to plant into soil?

So many variables, so many opinions. Yet cloning is the next step in my development that needs to be mastered.  Growing from seed is one thing but cloning is vital to progress as a grower.

I have had some success. I take a lot of clones most die but maybe 5% live. I need some help here to get my rates up?

    • I clone several different ways, the DIY aero cloner I made works best, rapid rooters  is my second choice, letting cuttings sit in a glass of water works, so does just sticking them in soil. Gels and powders are optional but you dont have to use them if you dont want too. SHB has tried several different gels and does a lot of cloning so hopefully he will chime in.

      • Add a short cycle timer to the shopping list if you're in a warmer climate.

      • Dome on or off? : On

        Venting? : NO

        Humidity Levels? : 100%

When to plant into soil? : NEVER

Aero cloners are great and they work well!  this is just how i clone... I use a humidity dome sealed up the whole time i am cloning and i spray a foliar spray on the leaf to feed them maybe once a day, or when it needs it. I dont use fancy cloning gels. I use Aloe Vera gel right off the plant. you can even use honey! you dont want an intense light. I use a T5 with 4 bulbs. it usually takes 2 weeks on average using aloe in a dome

        Peace

        • I just read an article that claimed when the leaves turn yellow that means its forming roots. Have you ever noticed that? I have not paid attention so I dont know. I can usually tell they have roots when I see roots, lol

          • seems like i always have a few yellow leaf on my clones and i just disregard it and focus on the new growth. didnt know what it indicated.

          • I have also read that yellowing leaves on a clone are an indication that the plant is pulling resources from the leaves to aid the root growth.

Aloe Vera as a cloning gel has come up also in my research. I have access to fresh Aloe Vera plants and will definitely try using fresh gel from just picked leaves.

I believe my clones are getting to wet because I do live in a hot and humid climate. Any suggestions on how to clone in this environment. I have backed off on watering which I hope will help. I  do use a dome and keep the vents open. Dryness is likely not my particular problem.

            • Too wet can be a problem, I noticed that with my cloner running 24/7 they do root faster on the timer and rapid rooters do hold a lot of water. It may break down to an oxygen issue since you can clone in a glass of water and that's about as wet as it get

I think the reason there is so much conflicting info on cloning is because so many methods work,

              • i think if youre going to use a humidity dome, keep the vents sealed until the roots have popped out. then vent gradually in preparation for transplant

              • There is a lot of bro science out there when it comes to cloning weed. Some proven and some not... TBS the greenhouses that I have seen produce clones, clone under a constant mist system that mists plants on a timer, several times a day. No domes, no nutes, and plenty of air movement. That's the benefit of having a greenhouse. The way you prepare a clone is also important, as is the media you use. Whatever media you use put about a inch layer of perlite on the bottom. This helps with drainage, and air movement. Environment is the most important factor when cloning. Temp 80, humidity 80 plus, with some air movement . T-5 lighting works well, as does Mother Nature . The pic I've included, is of clones taken 3 weeks ago, kept outside mainly in shade, and watered daily with the spray nozzle of the garden hose. They're ready to transplant !

                • Clip your clone, dip it in clonex gel, put it in your cloner with clonex solution. I run it 24/7 til the roots pop. Usually 7-10 day's and your in your medium. For us soil guy's anyway.

                  • SHB did a fantastic tutorial on cloning a while back, probably didn't transfer over to the new site. Between him CPW and Chubby I don't think you could be in better hands!

                    • Cloning is easy peasy bruh ! BUT you must take a few things into consideration that are very critical for success.  Environment is probably the most important ! This includes temps (75-85), humidity 85 and up (you can get away with lower humidity and lower temps), some air circulation, and a veg photoperiod, I like 18/6 for clones. Prepping a clone can make or break you success rate. Lots of growers on WP are very successful when cloning, they all have their own proven ways. I use oasis 1.25 " cubes . Whatever media you choose make sure it drains well ! I also use a 1" layer of perlite under the oasis cubes. This provides even better drainage, and also provides a layer for the roots to grow in. I use a powdered rooting hormone, and sometimes I use KLR from Dynagrow that mixes in the water that you'll put the clones in, before sticking them in the rooting hormone and the oasis cubes. Try to take a clone with at least 3 sets of leaves, you will want to remove the bottom set of leaves to keep the bottom cleaned up and promote air flow,. I've used domes and I've used no dome at all, if you use a dome don't fall in love with it ! Take it off everyday for n hour or so. I always make a angled cut on my clones so they stick easier, and I also peel back 1/2" of outer skin at the bottom of the clone, this exposes the cambial layer (the layer of a plant that transports the nutes and water throughout the plant). BEFORE I dip it in the rooting hormone. MAKE SURE YOUR CONTAINER HAS DRAINAGE HOLES IN IT !! Water the piss out of the clones when you first take the cuttings and stick them in your media. I water every day with a wand (spray) pretty heavy for the first 3-4 days, then you can back off a little. Some growers feed clones some don't. I've done both.  Once you see that they've rooted you can transplant and feed. Give yourself 30 days for rooting, and always take more than you need . If you have a good environment, good drainage and don't letum dry out you'll be good to go ! Peace
