Kush Stems

I have 2 strains growing in coco, a Rainbow Kush and a Mandarin Cookies, both getting fed from the same res, under the same light, etc. The Mandarin Cookies has branches like an Oak, you need pliers to super crop. The Rainbow Kush has branches like paper straws, its tough to super crop because they crimp and split long ways. I wonder why that is? Both are getting Silica

    • Different strains will uptake silica differently would be my guess if you asked the same question and not used any silica I would be more dumbfounded.

      • The leaves on the Rainbow Kush are huge so maybe that has something to do with it or maybe it just needs more silica? I thought silica was just to harden the outer skin so I wonder what fills in the middles?

      • i know what youre talking about regarding stem rigidity. i had the plastic straw stems on my last Green Crack and all 5 of my California Orange's last year; and during heavy flower the stems folded badly and needed support. i usually use silica, especially if i see a plant start to get out of control. But, it seems that when I use silica to counteract the stretch its too late. I think it helps if you know the strain ahead of time. on my next photoperiod grow i plan to grow Cali Orange again and now that i know the strain, i intend to hit them pretty hard and early with heavy doses of silica

        • Keep us posted on what you find out, does it fill the void or does it just make the stems brittle and does it matter.

          • in my opinion, some/most strains dont need silica at all and they turn out stout and strong

            • Mandarin certainly doesn't need it for the branches but I think its good for flowers as well.

              • Wow, they really appear to hate each other dont they.  LOL

I dont think its air flow because I have an oscillating fan hitting that one pretty hard, hard enough I thought it was too much, maybe I should turn off the fan for a couple of days and see if it fills in and I dont think more calcium hurts at all. Thanks good video.

              • I've had that myself didn't seem to affect how good it was, smell or taste. Everytime I had that happen was in soil grows. And happened in varying degrees some like a straw and some that was about the size of the ink cartridge of and ink pen.

                • I think it is genetic, 2 different strains in different grow media and in different grow area's, both Rainbow Kush plants have hollow stems and the Mandarin Cookies are like Oak trees. The ones in flower are getting Silica and the ones in veg are not but the ones in veg are filling in.

                • Do you think it could be not enough airflow in the tent.
