Organic PH Up and Down

Ive recently installed a RO system for the house and plants.  I have been concerned with chlorine and chloramine in my water killing off the benificial bacteria after a few days.  Deeper thinking on the matter brought on the thought of the PH up and down Im using might have the same effect on the bacteria and fungi.  Could anyone shed some light on this and let me know what you think?

Saw the Foop Ph Up and Down product line and am very interested if anyone has used this product.

      • I really like Joshua's answer! I am a little different in my approach to water though. I have a pond and I have always used water from it for my plants. I have no scientific knowledge on this subject but I have always believed that natural is better. RO systems waist a TON of water and from my understanding strip the water from beneficial micro nutrients (just my understanding). I have installed water purification systems like Aquasana products in  homes for many years that remove impurities naturally without stripping the water of micro nutrients. For my ph up or down I have always gotten them from an aquarium store because I figured if it doesn't kill the fish or amphibians it's probably OK. I'm not saying that I know the right way to do anything but this is what works for me.

        • My creek has a ph level of 6.46 on a constant. I check it every other day and on days it rains because it fluctuates with the rain.

          • It does definitely fluctuate with rain. My pond is usually is around 6.8 give or take.

          • So what does everyone use to control the ups and downs?  General Hydroponics?

              • Man there is so much when it come to organic growing, it makes my head hurt just thinking about trying to answer that question for you.

My best advice would be to get a book called teaming with microbes by Jeff lowenfields or TLO Organics by the Rev.

                • What up BigSarge, I was gunna use your initials (BS) ooops  ! Lowenfield definitely knows his stuff . I've got a couple of his books, but my experience with organic soils is patience, patience, and more patience. Microbes, bacteria, and fungi take some time to do their thing, especially when you're first gettin started. I'm talkin 3-4 months. Organic soils truly do get better with time, if you maintain them correctly. Don't forget the BIOCHAR, it will help sustain the microbes and ensure productive soils. Here's a little research I found on PH'ing with Phosphoric acid . Peace...  3% phosphoric acid puts microbes into a dormant state. This is the amount added to fish hydrolysate to stabilize it for storage. This amount does not kill 'all' of the microbes but it must be thoroughly diluted before adding to soil without doing damage. So, when you use lesser amounts, you are likely not doing a great deal of damage microbially. As for doing something because commercial farmers do it....well they have been doing stupid things for years.....unless you were referring to commercial organics? What are the good results? and why are they using it?

I myself would only use it for putting microbes to sleep. I'm not into the pH manipulation thing, but I don't see that minor amounts are worse than anything else which manipulates pH. (bacteria = towards alkaline: fungi = towards acidic)
