LED Watts Per Sq Ft Vs HID Watts Per Sq Ft

Does the old standard of 35watts per square foot hold true for LED's like it did for HID's or is it like Apples and Oranges?

    • Pretty close IME. 30w/sq ft works for COB and QB type LEDs. For example, the HLG 550 is 480w and will flower a 4x4. A bunch of those QB type boards are 240, 280 and 480w. Lines up pretty good for 4x2, 3x3 and 4x4. 35w will work for some strains but it's good to have a dimmer to bring it down when needed.

      • I have tried 30 watts per sq ft will led lights but really had much better grows once I got that number closer to 50.

        • Hey Hulk, nice seeing ya! 50 was the go to for blurple type LEDs but do you use 50 with the newer LEDs like Spider Farmer or HLG?

          • 50 is my target but I am using the PPFD maps as more of a decision maker. I hope that is a good idea.

          • Research is saying you get more light per watt from LED's than you do with HID's, of course most of the research is sponsored by LED manufacturers.
