Your only real other way to get them to sex is doing exactly what you are planning. You could take clones and use those to test? Seems easier to do what you plan.
I have done clones before and flipped them while they rooted but for this round I dont really want to make a male into a "mother" so I figure this was as quick a way as possible, I do wonder how much the maturity of the parents matters though,
