is it safe??? safe for what? you just take a sample of your water and test it. then throw out the sample. not one drop of that should be in your nutrient reservoir. thats why  they give  you the test vial

i use pH test indicator drops from General Hydroponics when i test my pH and theyre 100% accurate as long as youre not color blind
