"Draw water from" ... leaves don't store water. Each leaf has enough water to maintain that leaf's cells. Any extra is transpired out.
Water intake is through the roots.
Fewer leaves should mean less of a water need for the plant as a whole.

I was thinking leaves are what pulled water up through the roots as they develop new growth, then they after they mature they are storage for Mobile nutrients, I didn't know the roots push the water up.
Looking back when I Shwazz I do it at the flip and again after 22 days, my records show the water I needed to replace in the RDWC goes up daily through the grow until the last 2 weeks when it slows down. Records from before I started Shwazzing have too many gaps to say either way.
