War was different back then. In ww2 a typical combat soldier saw direct action on average once every 30 days. Now granted, your engagement could be many days at a time but there tended to be down time in between. In Korea that number dropped to somewhere in the 21 day number. In Vietnam it dropped again to around 14 days between direct combat. In Iraq and Afghanistan that number was down to around a week and when you aren't in direct engagements you are worrying about a fucking IED. Combat today is a lot more stressful with less down time. The ww2 generation saved the world no doubt but I think their return to normal life was a little easier than returning troops today. Good topic!
