The soil does need something to allow it to breathe. Also, that soil looks good but most of the nutrients could be washed out. You wouldn't know without testing but you can't go wrong by supplementing with organic matter. A quick and simple way is to get a bag of organic fertilizer and start working it in...top dress your soil and have patience.
