Fencing/chicken wire and RAT and mouse traps can also be used. There is unfortunately critters that you can't control too. Groundhogs and armadillos are in this category. Dogs will dig up plants that are fertilized with organics. I'd say your prob is ground hogs, if they  ate the plants, they don't leave much. 12 gauge works well too !!! Good luck
