Sexing it up (part 2), sexing with a cutting

by Jack about July 12 - report

Happy Friday portal! So a while back I started a grow with a bag seed from White Papaya #4 (best ive found in a Oklahoma dispendary).. I took a cutting from it a couple weeks ago and have been keeping it in a glass of water in a window seal during the day, and in a dark unused cupboard at night. After a couple weeks I still have no clue as to the sex... What should I do? Im ready to flower this space, but need to know the sex so i can transplant and switch to 12/12. Also, said cutting has grown some amazing white roots, several that are 6" long. Can i plant this thing? In soil? Rapid rooter? Rock wool? I l luv the way the mother is growing, and if female I would really like to keep this pheno going in my garden for a while

If it has roots, I would plant it in whatever medium you use. I would also up the hours of dark to 18 or more to force it to indicate sex.

Cool, thanks! So once it shows sex, will i be able to veg it, or would it have to be flowered immediately?

Once it shows sex, you can go ahead and veg it out. It will take another minute to switch back to veg from flower, just like going from veg to flower.

Awesome! I'll increase the dark timeto force sex then plant in soil and veg it. So no Rapid rooter or rockwool cube, just plant directly in medium? Im using a coco/peat/perlite mix, Nectar for the Gods #4 blend.. Thanks again!

you can use a rooter or a rockwool plug if you like but you already have roots so its your choice of medium at this point. the hard part is done.

I agree to plant it and let it establish a root system in the soil then flip it. Remember they usually show sex around 6 weeks. Plus or minus a week or 2. If it's flipped & you're in a hurry it will take time for it to get back in the veg state costing you a week or more. Your cutting is as old as the plant you took it from .

That's funny shit! If you took it from a mother plant that's 8 weeks old I would think it would be showing sex relatively soon. I say plant it in whatever medium you like and veg it till you're to flip. I would watch the mother to so sign because it will ...  more

I see clones for sale on Craig’s list all the time but I live in a legal state. I don’t think dispensary’s are going to be real eager for their customers to start growing their own though. Do many dispensary’s grow their own?

I doubt they do. Never been in one though. In Arkansas we have 3 licensed growers that supply the dispenseries. I'm sure they are in cahoots one way or another. I wouldn't think they would want you growing their products. You would also think they wouldn'...  more

J.. That's amazing that you can clone in water only... I've read where a few WP homies do the same . I've tried and failed at water only. Anywho... Transplant the clone soon. Walmart sells a seedling mix that would work. Add some mycos/bac and BAAM !! No nutes 1 week. This clone is a perfect example of why you should transplant seedlings/rooted clones, into a 6" pots, for the next 14 days, and then in the final pot. As far as sexing the plant use light deprevation some where, some how . Get the plant under 12/12  for a couple weeks. Peace out Holmes

Well I clearly didnt read this question, you got roots from putting the cutting in water only? I have had cuttings in water for 6 weeks and they stayed alive and flowered but they didnt have roots. Plant it.

Now the bigger concern is this is a bag seed from a dispenerary and it was good smoke? Chances are good it is female but there is also its a chance its a hermi.

The Markers Mark, thge Papaya cone and RSO is kicking in so I should shut the hell up

I would definitely plant it in a #1 pot and flower it with the mom. It has to be getting more daylight than dark or it would have already shown sex. A pinhole light leak can keep them from flowering also. Especially with a smaller plant. With complete darkness, 12/12 should make it flower with absolutely no problem though.

Thanks for all the help everyone, i'll eventually figure this 'sexing" business out. The plan will be to transplant the mother up to a 3 or 5ga pot, and plant the clone thats in the glass of water straight into a soil/coco/perlite/EM-1 Bokashi mix. I'm not gonna use a rooter or plug, ,the roots are over 6" long, i think it would be a pain in the ass putting it into the plug without damaging anything... after reading all the comments, and the fact there was only 1 seed in the bag, and i smoked over a 1/2oz of it, hopefully it 's a fem seed and i wont have any issues. However for safety'sake i'll be checing the mother and the clone for Naner's, first i'm gonna have to go to GrowWeedEasy and see what Naner's look like lol. Thans again folks, and have a great weekend!
