Requesting Advice on Harvest Time Solved

by TheLobster120 about December 18, 2018 - report

Greetings everyone.

This is my first ever grow, and so I have no experience of when the buds on the AK-48 Auto I'm growing will be ripe for the harvesting. I also have no magnifyer to study the trichomes' colors. This coming Friday will mark the end of the 7th week of flowering, but I am noticing some clues that other experienced growers have taught to look out for to decide when to harvest, such as:

Smell starting to become pronounced

Plant has most of its fan leaves yellowing (few of my sugar leaves are starting to yellow at the tips)

General loss of vigor in stem/branches (2 flacid branches)

Very few white pistils developing and most pistils already red brown and receding

Plant starting to take in less water from the medium

What troubles me though, is that my plant started flowering later than usual - 8th week from seed. Isn't it too early to be showing harvest signs? The plant did experience stress, some of which was out of my control, but I am okay with the part caused by my short-sightedness. I just do not want to harvest early and end up with diminished yields, less than I could have if I wait some time.

I have attached some pics that show the condition of the plant. She's not in the best shape as you can see. Have I mentioned she's seen much stress under my watch? My plan is to harvest this weekend unless you good folks advise otherwise.

Many thanks, as always.

***Next day edit***

Hey there everyone. I just finished cleaning the plant up. I removed a lot of dead leaves, and she definetly looks better now. It was a good idea - I can see more of the colas now. I've uploaded some pictures in case anyone is interested in giving some thoughts on the harvest time. Thanks to all of your inputs, I've decided to hold on just a little bit (maybe one more week) before harvesting. I will continue to water her with plain water and give one more flush just before harvest.

I would remove the dead leaves where you can see everything better. Get yourself a scope from amazon or eBay so you can view the trichomes. Looking at the trics is the only way you know the plant is ready for harvest. Imo this plant is not ready for harvest and has a way to go yet. I would feed it flowering nutrients, keep an eye on the trichomes and flush it when the trichomes are mostly cloudy. If you are going to grow weed you need to get the equipment you need to do so or you can miss the harvest window and harvest too early or too late. Good luck. Peace

I already ordered a 30x, but my shortsightedness made me order it late; it will arrive in a few weeks. Hopefully next time will be better. Thanks for the advice!

From what I can see, from your pictures, I say stop all feeding, Flush the plant 3 times! (if you can) and then cut her down for harvest!

I've stopped feeding since my last flush, which was also my first, 1 week ago. I've been using organic nutes, so I'm comfortable with the fact that there wasn't much toxic salt buildup.

How many days should I give it between when I flush and when I make ...  more

Hey stick. It's weird - I posted an answer, but the site didn't take it yesterday. No matter.

I wanted to say that Nirvana states their AK Auto finishes in 11-13 weeks. I'm actually worried I'm thinking about harvesting too early. Heh. Are you sure about...  more

Brown or yellow leaves near harvest is a result of flushing and you haven’t started flush. I would clean everything up by removing all the dead leaves and most of the other fan leaves so you can see what’s going on. And hope you have some salvageable smoke once you clean it up

It is impossible for me to tell you when your plant is ready to harvest. Harvesting at different times causes the effects to be different. I always go by the trics! I suggest you invest a few bucks in a handheld mycroscope or jewlers loop! Only you will be able to tell when to harvest acordding to what effects you want. In my past experiance, harvesting to early is a short lived racy buzz, just right and you get a long lasting mind and body buzz, and too late and it will put you to sleep. There is a couple week harvest window when your flowers are ripe. I say just don't harvest too early or you will loose weight if it is not completely mature. It can have all cloudy trics and still be putting on weight! Good luck and happy growing my friend!

A magnifyer is most certainly a useful tool. I wish I'd gotten mine a while ago to test this. Anyway, I'm okay with the point I'm in now. Still learning and that's good for me. Thanks justme!
