Ballasts

by Kristian about May 16, 2018 - report

So this morning my 3 digital 600w burned from somekind electric leak to the growing strukture.

Bought the cheapest magnatic 600w in the store. They run hotter and are less effictiant ,

(they say)

The room was taken and rewired, every earth checked. My feeling that its brighter in the room then before. 2 sodium and 1 metal produced a red hue. Now its like more day light in there.

The magnatic are more robust and handle spikes better. And it seems better at driving metal halide then(even sodium to) cheap chinese digital. 2 year warranty was a good selling point.

I have more trust to the new ballasts then I did with the no name copy ballast.

Go with what you can afford but I personally wouldn't be a cheap ass with the most important part of a grow!

It was $250 against $1000, did not want pay such price. Plus as electrician I trust magnatic as robust, some energy spike wont fry your ballast. I live in building that was built 1960, not the best electricity.

I was druling over that nanolux in the shop, 1 600w costs $400.

I just cant rule out another power spike, especially with 4x 600w sodium/metal.

And I could not efford it if we real talk a little. I have a little usb fan blowing on them, they do heat up somewhat. Seems its ramen and water out this month.

When you pay the tarriffs and tax on it, it is similar to the store.

I still get this feeling it is brighter then old dirt cheap digital no name copy ones. Especially the metal/halide. The new digital ones are much better. Might jump up to led when cash allows. Just have to find someone to mail to. I will end up with a mix of somekind.

My friend that owned those digital ballast was not a happy camper. They were old, that milded his sourness.

I went through the time of purchasing cheap ballasts until i got tired of either returning them or losing money on them. Now for my ballasts i use Phantom 2 ballasts. I can use the ballast at 3 different settings, which helps during seedling phase, and the pluss phase works great the last few weeks of flowering. I have had my 1000 watt and my 600 watt ballasts for several years now with no problems during use. I found it was better to pay a little more money than to have to worry if the ballast is going to burn up or go bad on you. Just my experiences with ballasts. This is another reason i like using LED lights too. Peace
