Scratch and dent - Home Depot

by HomeBrew about October 12, 2017 - report

This applies to Perlite and Vermiculite only and may apply to other items as well.

So I was at Home Depot and was looking for perlite and Vermiculite. They had 3 of the 2 cubic foot bags of Perlite for around $18 each and 2 of the bags were torn open, so I grabbed the only closed bag. At the register I asked if they discount the open bags and was told they sell them for 50% off. One was missing maybe a gallon and the other was missing maybe a cup, so I had her ring me up for both open bags for the price of one and now have over 3.75 cubic feet for the price of 2.

The moral of the story - Don't be afraid to ask for a deal on the open stock. Especially on a product that does not expire.

I normally never ask, but my wife does all the time so I figured it couldn't hurt and it totally paid off.

Lol, yeah I've been shopping for spring ever since August. Picked up a gallon of Alaska fish for $9 yesterday at wally world. I used to do the broken bag thing all the time but it seems everyone else is into it now...beating me to it, lol.

Bummer. That's a good deal on the fert. I may have to check them out for their clearance nutes. Not that I want a fish smell in my indoor growing room, but they may have some liquid seaweed I could grab at a bargain.

They sometimes sell full pallets of garden soil and amendments  cheap.  I bought broken bags of birdseed that way..

I buy my perlite from Home Depot as well, and in the same large size bags. My price is the same as you posted. I will have to check out the bags to see if any of them are torn the next time i need to purchase some perlite. Thanks for the tip HB. Peace

Lowes will do the same thing, they will give you 5% at the register if you point out any kind of imperfection in an item ot the packaging. I saw a old woman return a shovel that was literally worn out but the handle was broken so they gave her a new one. I think she only used it to bury husbands on Sundays and I was afraid to ask how the handle broken
