Seed starting methods for Hydro

The lady @ the hydro store said I could grow in dirt till you get  good roots then wash the roots off and plant in the clay pebbles. How do you guys and gals do yours?

    • I use bare root clones, myself.

For seedlings, just plant your rockwool cube, rapid rooter, etc., in the hydroton.

      • You got a drip ring, but I don't see a water pump?

        • it sucks up the water with the air pump.

it does what with the what...just don't sound right to me, air pumps don't like water...maybe I'm missing something...

                    • That ones similar to the one I got, but I took the ring thing apart an replaced the tube an added a submersible pump.

the one that’s on there now won’t make the cut unless you get one that’s flawless cause I had a 1775 GPH air pump on it and it didn’t put out much water at all, I had to add the pump before it was any good.

                        • You don’t need a strong one, I’ll post a pic of mine later tonight when I’m off work.

the one I use with it is a 12$ one off Amazon and I used 3/4” tubing to connect the pump to the ring.

                        • I use Rock wool for hydro, Rapid Rooters for Coco Coir and bare roots for clones most of the time. This time I had a seed drop off a breeder and into coco coir and it germinated it self.

                          • i prefer split rockwool plugs as opposed to cubes, also i like to let the young seedling sit in the humidity dome, under a T5 for a few days for the roots to build up and leaf to grow before putting them in my bucket/reservoir

                                • no it doesn't . was wondering same thing about oxygenated water

                                  • The movement of the water adds more oxygen than an air stone will.

trust me I tried both with that biscotti an had to go back to the ring, I should still have the pics on my profile if you wanna check it out cake.

                                  • I dont mean to be a dick and I mean this sincerely as a brother grower. I would return that set and we can let you know how to do the same think as piece work. Bucket, net pot, air pump, air stone water and done. A 2 gallon bucket is kind of small to start with

                                    • It is not being a dick, I just am not that knowledgeable. How much money does the net , pebbles and fittings cost? I have a 60 gallon whisper air pump, should work fine, right? Now you got me thinking. lmao

                                      0 0 0 0 0 0
                                      • That pump should work, you just need an air stone, Lowes or Home Depot for the bucket if you dont have one and Amazon, ebay or Walmart will have everything you need, I prefer the 5 gallon buckets and net pots and lids that are one piece but that's just me.

                                      • another reason why i dont care for submersible pumps is because they warm the water if its being circulated

                                        • I am with you sub on pumps if you don't need it it causes heat

had one in the tanks , little thing to stir the pot, came back to hot tanks. no tanks.

I check them now and give it a stir, good to go. A  possitive for the auto pot you really don't need any pumps. Begining to suspect the air to the roots is a luxury, not a neccesity. since the ones in the open pots/trays don't have it and they do fine.

                                          • You could get a little timer off Amazon so the pump is off on its own every now an then, but it comes down to your own Choice man.

I will have you know though my biscotti grew just fine with the pump on 24/7.

                                            •  IF you had pieced together a bucket, you wouldn't be worrying about a water pump.

You'd just raise the water level in the bucket to reach the media, until the roots develop enough to hang in the water. Then lower it a couple inches to leave an air gap.

Then you'd put an air stone on the air pump, and you're off to the races.

Seems like they've over-complicated your kit.
